Mobil 1™ Advanced Hybrid Lubrication Technology: Verstappen Attends the New Product Launch

Recently, the premium fully synthetic lubricant brand Mobil 1 held a new-product launch event in Shanghai, unveiling its latest Mobil 1 Classic Performance Series formulation specifically designed for hybrid vehicles. This launch marks Mobil 1’s expansion beyond its traditional strengths in conventional internal-combustion-engine technology to embrace the hybrid segment, where operating conditions are even more demanding, while continuing to drive innovation across the industry.
The new product is precisely targeted at China’s rapidly growing hybrid vehicle market, designed to deliver long-lasting, stable lubrication solutions for a wide range of powertrains—infusing engines with “Everlasting Power 1” and ensuring performance that remains uncompromised for up to 200,000 kilometers. Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen attended the event in person, sharing his confidence in Mobil 1 technology and taking part in the official launch ceremony.

“ExxonMobil has been deeply engaged in the Chinese market for decades, consistently moving in lockstep with China’s automotive industry and witnessing and actively participating in every stage of its development,” said Zhang Songbin, President of ExxonMobil (China) Investment Co., Ltd. “Over the years, we have leveraged our existing resources to deepen our presence in China, ramping up investment in local technological innovation and product R&D to better serve Chinese consumers.” In recent years, China’s new-energy-vehicle market has experienced robust growth, with plug-in hybrid and range-extended hybrid vehicles showing particularly strong momentum; sales are projected to approach 5.9 million units in 2025. The expanding market size is driving consumers’ vehicle-use and maintenance needs toward greater diversification and customization. However, compared with conventional gasoline-powered vehicles, hybrid powertrains operate under far more varied and complex conditions, placing higher demands on lubricant performance—especially in China’s diverse road and climate environments, where these challenges are particularly pronounced.
Against this backdrop, Mobil is further enhancing its hybrid lubricant portfolio with advanced hybrid lubrication technology, introducing new products in both the Mobil 1 Classic Performance Series and the Mobil Super Synthetic Full Protection Series—specifically formulated for hybrid applications. Each of these two series now includes two low-viscosity grades: 0W-16 and 0W-20. By expanding its offerings in the low-viscosity segment, Mobil is not only broadening its product lineup but also meeting consumers’ diverse needs as powertrain technologies continue to evolve.

This new hybrid-specific product, while maintaining the original outstanding performance, has been specially reinforced and optimized to meet the complex operating conditions of hybrid vehicles. It is compatible with conventional gasoline-powered cars and fully satisfies the driving needs of mainstream hybrid models, delivering sustained power output over the vehicle’s long service life under a wide range of driving conditions and helping the engine perform like new. For plug-in hybrids, the frequent alternation between electric motor and internal-combustion-engine drive results in more frequent engine start–stop cycles and shorter operating times, which can lead to fuel dilution. Additionally, the engine operates at lower temperatures than in conventional gasoline vehicles, making it more prone to moisture accumulation. Mobil 1’s new formulation boasts exceptional water-management capabilities: it actively “absorbs” any unevaporated moisture within the engine and locks it into the lubricant, with emulsion-stabilization performance more than four times the industry standard. It also delivers superior rust and corrosion protection as well as anti-icing performance, ensuring that the engine continues to perform like new even after prolonged operation.
Range-extended hybrid vehicles rely on the engine primarily to recharge the battery rather than directly propelling the vehicle; as a result, the engine often operates at high RPMs under heavier loads than those experienced by conventional gasoline-powered cars, leading to more pronounced wear. The new product boasts exceptional anti-wear performance, which effectively mitigates engine wear even under prolonged, demanding high-RPM conditions while maintaining robust, sustained power output—helping the engine perform like new². To validate the outstanding performance of Mobil 1’s latest hybrid-specific formulation across various hybrid architectures and operating environments, Mobil 1 conducted an extensive, long-distance “Hybrid All-Region Endurance Road Test” spanning nine major Chinese cities from Hainan to Heihe and encompassing a wide range of real-world driving scenarios. The results confirmed the product’s enduring, high-performance capabilities over thousands of miles, ensuring that hybrid engines maintain like-new performance².

While delivering outstanding performance improvements, Mobil 1 also integrates environmental sustainability into its product design. The new 0W-16 and 0W-20 formulations in the Mobil 1 Classic Performance Hybrid line are packaged in bottles made from 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic and have earned “Green Recycled Plastic Chain of Custody” certification, helping to reduce the amount of plastic waste sent to landfills, incinerators, and other disposal methods, as well as lowering the overall greenhouse gas emissions across the plastic’s entire life cycle. In addition, the packaging utilizes ExxonMobil’s innovative StarBrand polymer technology, which reduces label thickness by 30%.
In the 2026 season, Formula One underwent a major overhaul of its technical regulations: a brand-new hybrid power unit was introduced, with internal combustion engines and electric motors each contributing 50% of the total power output, bringing the system even closer to civilian-specification standards. To support this transition, Mobil 1 developed a custom lubricant formulation for Red Bull Racing that delivers outstanding performance in key areas such as friction reduction, cooling efficiency, deposit control, and wear protection. This formulation enables seamless collaboration between the internal combustion engine and the kinetic energy recovery system, which can deliver up to 350 kilowatts of power, ensuring sustained and stable power delivery and helping Red Bull Racing continue to push the boundaries on the track.
Ms. Zhao Jie, Deputy General Manager of ExxonMobil (China) Investment Co., Ltd. and Head of the North Asia Marketing Division, stated: “For Mobil 1, Formula One is one of the premier proving grounds for pushing the boundaries under extreme conditions and ultimately bringing cutting-edge technologies back to the road. Since the brand’s inception, we have been actively engaged in motorsport. Over the past several decades, F1 engine regulations have evolved continuously—from large-displacement, turbocharged power units to today’s hybrid era—and Mobil 1 has seized every opportunity to innovate, refine our technology, and feed those advancements into the research, development, and enhancement of our consumer products, bridging the gap between the track and the road to benefit a broader range of consumers.”

Meanwhile, coinciding with the F1 Chinese Grand Prix, Mobil 1 will stage the “Mobil 1 Power Carnival” consumer event at the West Bund Dream Center in Shanghai from March 12 to 15, bringing the speed and passion of Formula One from the racetrack straight into the heart of the city. As the highlight of the carnival, Mobil 1 organized an exclusive in-person meet-and-greet between Max Verstappen and Chinese fans, turning the mission of “promoting motorsport culture” into a direct and heartfelt gesture. At the event, Verstappen engaged in close-up interactions with numerous racing enthusiasts, sharing amusing anecdotes from both inside and outside the paddock, extending the thrilling moments on the track right into the carnival venue and creating together with fans an unforgettable memory of speed and passion.

In addition, at the event venue, Mobil 1 showcased the evolution of F1’s powertrain innovation through a series of cutting-edge exhibits and engaging, diverse interactive experiences, seamlessly integrating them into simulated driving and trendy lifestyle elements. This allowed every consumer who loves life, loves driving, and is passionate about motorsport to connect with the brand and experience the one-of-a-kind allure of racing.
