NIO and Geely have struck a major battery-swap partnership.

On September 28, 2026, NIO and Geely Holding Group announced a comprehensive strategic partnership in the charging and battery‑swap sector. The two parties have reached consensus on all‑round collaboration spanning technology, operations, and capital, planning to jointly invest in their respective battery‑swap business entities, share charging and battery‑swap technologies and standards, co‑build a nationwide charging and battery‑swap service network, and jointly pioneer a new paradigm of open collaboration and win‑win cooperation for China’s automotive industry. Under the agreement, Geely Holding Group will acquire a 30% stake in NIO Energy by contributing its 100% equity in E‑E Interconnect and RMB 640 million in cash. Upon completion of the transaction, Geely Holding Group will hold a 30% interest in NIO Energy, and E‑E Interconnect’s commercial‑vehicle battery‑swap operations will be integrated into NIO Energy. NIO Energy will continue to optimize the operation of its commercial‑vehicle battery‑swap network and provide support to E‑E Interconnect’s commercial‑vehicle business. In addition, the two companies will jointly develop unified consumer‑oriented battery‑swap technologies and standards; Geely Holding Group will design battery‑swap‑compatible models for individual consumers, while NIO Energy will provide battery‑swap services for these consumer‑focused vehicles.
This collaboration will further accelerate the expansion of NIO’s battery‑swap network. By 2030, NIO Energy plans to have built a total of 10,000 battery‑swap stations, with annual electricity demand from the network expected to exceed 10 billion kWh. As a new type of energy infrastructure, battery‑swap stations are increasingly demonstrating both commercial and societal value. In the smart‑charging sector, NIO will acquire a stake in Haohan Energy, a subsidiary of Geely Holding Group. Upon completion of the transaction, NIO will hold a 10% equity interest in Haohan Energy. The two companies will fully interconnect their charging resources, jointly enhancing the coverage and operational efficiency of their charging networks. By the end of 2027, Geely plans to have built more than 22,000 charging stations and deployed over 100,000 charging guns, including more than 15,000 Geely Smart Charging Stations and over 50,000 Smart Charging Guns, thereby achieving nationwide coverage down to the county level.
