IT Home reported on December 14 that, according to The Elec, Volkswagen will focus on producing batteries at its European-based factories while simultaneously developing CATL's CTP battery technology. Soonho Ahn, Chief Technology Officer of Volkswagen's battery subsidiary PowerCo, announced at a recruitment event targeting Korean battery professionals that Volkswagen will complete its battery plant in Salzgitter, Germany, and subsequently build another battery factory in Spain and other regions across Europe.
CTP refers to directly integrating battery cells into the battery pack, allowing more cells to be packed into the same volume—and thus boosting the range of electric vehicles. Currently, CATL's CTP technology has already advanced to its third generation. Reports indicate that PowerCo may also develop a CTP technology similar to CATL's.
According to Ahn, PowerCo also plans to establish a regional office in South Korea, though he did not disclose the exact timeline. IT Home has learned that PowerCo is a subsidiary of Volkswagen, responsible for overseeing battery development and production. Volkswagen previously introduced a standardized prismatic battery, stating that it will be deployed in 80% of its electric vehicle models by 2030.
