2022 NIO Power Day: Making Charging as Convenient as Refueling

At the recently concluded 2022 NIO Power Day, NIO President Qin Lihong and Vice President Shen Fei shared with us the latest updates on NIO’s charging and battery-swapping ecosystem, all centered around the "Thousand": 1,011 battery swap stations, 1,681 charging stations, and 10 million battery-swapping services. They also unveiled NIO POWER’s future plans, including the development of an even denser high-speed battery-swapping network, the launch of the third-generation battery swap station, 500kW ultra-fast charging capabilities, a peak current of 650A, and an 800V battery platform.

According to official statements, NIO Power's ultimate goal is to make charging as convenient as refueling—with gas. As NIO explains, the company has currently achieved an 88.8% coverage rate (roughly reflecting the proportions of battery swapping, ultra-fast charging, regular fast charging, and one-click charging services).

On NIO Power Day, NIO officially launched its 1,000th battery swap station—located in Lhasa. To be precise, it wasn’t just one station that went live; instead, 11 new stations were unveiled simultaneously. As a result, NIO now operates a total of 1,011 battery swap stations nationwide. With this extensive network of swap stations, NIO can provide battery swap services more than 30,000 times per day on average. As of July 6, NIO’s One-Click Power-Up service has already delivered a cumulative total of 821,350 services. Meanwhile, the third-generation battery swap station is set to make its official debut by the end of this year or early next year—and testing for this cutting-edge model is already underway.

NIO plans to roll out 500kW ultra-fast charging piles by the end of this year, supporting a peak current of 650A and featuring liquid-cooling technology. The charging gun is designed to be lightweight and ergonomic, allowing even female users to operate it effortlessly with one hand. Meanwhile, NIO’s home charging stations have already been upgraded to version 2.0, delivering 7kW of power while occupying a compact footprint and boasting exceptionally low standby power consumption. These stations are provided free of charge to NIO’s first-generation owners, along with complimentary installation services. In terms of batteries, NIO’s battery-swapping network currently has 8,961 batteries in circulation—3,821 of which are the long-range 100 kWh variants, while the standard-range models (70/75 kWh versions) account for 5,140 units. By 2024, NIO will introduce an 800V high-voltage battery system paired with an advanced battery-swapping platform. Notably, this groundbreaking technology will be made available to the entire industry, fostering broader innovation and accessibility in the EV ecosystem.

Additionally, NIO has unveiled the Power Up Plan, featuring destination charging route solutions and its third-generation multifunctional mobile service vehicle. The former is designed to serve users by enabling them to select optimal charging routes based on their travel itineraries, ensuring seamless coverage throughout their journeys. As of today, NIO has already completed a total of 31 charging routes, with plans to expand this network to 168 routes by 2025. Meanwhile, the third-generation multifunctional mobile service vehicle recently entered operation last month. Equipped with three key service capabilities—charging, repair, and maintenance—it can deliver an impressive 100 km of range in just 10 minutes of charging. At select event locations, the vehicle even offers door-to-door energy replenishment services, serving as a valuable complement to existing battery swap stations and charging piles.
