Goodyear is developing airless tires for future self-driving cars or commercial vehicles.
Recently, according to foreign media reports, Goodyear is developing airless tires. Officially disclosed, these airless tires have already undergone rigorous testing—covering 75,000 miles at speeds up to 100 mph—at Goodyear's Luxembourg test facility. The tests were conducted using a Tesla Model 3 (available for configuration and pricing inquiries), and they also included evaluations under both cold and hot environmental conditions.
According to Goodyear, airless tires, also known as non-pneumatic tires (NPT), require less maintenance than conventional pneumatic tires and are better equipped to handle heavy-load scenarios. Therefore, these tires may be more suitable for vehicles beyond passenger cars—especially as the future likely brings an increase in autonomous vehicles transporting people or goods within urban areas, where airless tires would prove particularly well-suited.
Goodyear stated that its goal is to secure approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation for its airless tires, though this could take several years. Notably, airless tires may first be introduced in vehicles other than personal cars. In fact, besides Goodyear, other tire manufacturers have also shown interest in airless tire technology. For instance, Bridgestone showcased its concept of a puncture-resistant airless tire back in 2011. Similarly, Hankook unveiled its own airless tire prototype in 2013 and announced in 2015 that it was already ready for mass production. Lastly, Michelin also expressed in 2019 its plans to launch airless tires, with expectations that they could begin supplying General Motors as early as before 2024.
