BYD Embarks on Lead-Free Battery Initiative, Realizing the Green Dream
Recently, BYD has fully transitioned the starter batteries in its plug-in hybrid models from lead-acid to lithium-iron batteries, leveraging technological innovation to promote eco-friendly mobility and providing a powerful technological boost for the path toward green, low-carbon, and sustainable development.

Since the era of gasoline-powered vehicles, lead-acid batteries have been widely used as starter batteries. However, the chemical properties of lead-acid batteries also inherently make their drawbacks particularly pronounced: their strong self-discharge characteristic means that if left unused for an extended period, the battery may need to be recharged or replaced—even requiring roadside assistance or a tow truck—resulting in an extremely poor user experience.
More importantly, most lead-acid batteries have a lifespan of only 2 to 3 years, and their production and disposal processes pose significant environmental pollution and hazards, increasingly clashing with society's growing demands for environmental protection and low-carbon initiatives. Meanwhile, the large size and weight of lead-acid batteries also contribute to higher energy consumption in the entire vehicle.
Precisely because of this, BYD has taken the lead in advancing lead-free battery technology for entire vehicles, completely switching the starter batteries in its plug-in hybrid models to lithium iron batteries. Lithium iron batteries boast a significantly higher energy density, and when paired with the highly efficient battery management system, they can automatically monitor the charge level of the smaller battery—promptly replenishing it via the larger battery. This ensures that drivers never experience the frustrating situation where the car appears fully charged yet still runs out of power, thereby delivering a "qualitative" leap in user experience. Moreover, since lithium iron batteries are designed to match the vehicle’s lifespan, their production and recycling processes are more environmentally friendly. Combined with their lightweight and compact advantages, these batteries also help reduce overall vehicle energy consumption, ensuring that eco-friendly practices permeate every aspect of new-energy vehicles.
As China continues to advance the research, development, and application of green and low-carbon technologies while actively addressing global climate change, BYD will remain committed to driving innovation from every single detail, helping to "cool down the planet by 1°C."
