This isn’t Tesla’s first time participating in a Texas energy storage project, but this one is by far the largest yet, with a capacity exceeding 100 megawatts. Interestingly, Tesla is the battery supplier for Plus Power, which happens to be the managing entity of this very energy storage project.
Recently, Tesla's energy business has experienced rapid growth. In the fourth quarter of last year, the company deployed 1,584 megawatt-hours of energy storage products, setting a new record—nearly doubling year-over-year and increasing by 100% compared to the previous quarter.
Last month, severe weather put immense strain on Texas's power grid, nearly causing a complete collapse—and leaving many areas in the midst of widespread blackouts. This forced the state to rethink the current state of its energy infrastructure. Unfortunately, power from these renewable resources isn’t consistently available, making storage essential. During the recent winter storm, both Texas’s wind and solar energy systems went offline entirely.
