During the Spring Festival holiday, tolls on highways within Beijing's municipal area will be waived for passenger vehicles.
The Spring Festival holiday is just two days away. This morning (February 9), reporters learned from the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport that all toll roads within Beijing will waive tolls for small passenger vehicles during the 2021 Spring Festival holiday, with free passage available from 0:00 on February 11 to 24:00 on February 17, 2021. It is anticipated that highway traffic volume during the Spring Festival holiday will drop by approximately 30% compared to the year before last.
Although the Spring Festival holiday is traditionally a time for family reunions, due to multiple factors—including Beijing's advocacy for residents to celebrate the New Year in the city and avoid unnecessary travel out of Beijing amid COVID-19 prevention measures—the volume of transportation trips in Beijing significantly declined during the first 10 days of the 2021 Spring Festival travel rush.
According to statistics, from January 28 to February 6, intercity transportation saw an average of 111,000 passengers boarding and alighting on railways daily, and 50,200 passengers arriving and departing by civil aviation daily, both down over 80% compared to 2019. For intra-city transportation, ground bus passenger volume averaged 5,003,600 and rail passenger volume averaged 6,122,300 daily, both down approximately 40% compared to 2019. Expressway traffic averaged 1,442,300 vehicles per day, a 29% decrease compared to 2019.
During the 2021 Spring Festival holiday, all toll roads within Beijing will waive tolls for passenger vehicles with seven seats or fewer. The toll-free period runs from 00:00 on February 11, 2021, to 24:00 on February 17, 2021. For expressways, the time the vehicle exits the exit toll lane is determined by the networked toll collection system; for ordinary highways, the time the vehicle passes through the toll lane at the toll station is determined by the time the vehicle passes through the toll lane. During the Spring Festival holiday, average daily highway traffic is expected to be approximately 1.2 million vehicles, representing an increase of approximately 20% over the same period last year and a decrease of approximately 30% compared to the 2019 Spring Festival holiday. Peak daily traffic will be around 1.4 million vehicles.
Highway traffic will be low during the Spring Festival holiday, and pressure on the road network will be minimal. Traffic is expected to be generally smooth. However, the epidemic prevention and control situation is severe, and entry and exit control measures in Beijing have become more stringent. Traffic pressure is expected to be relatively high at checkpoints entering Beijing on major highways such as the Beijing-Tibet, Beijing-Chengde, Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao, Beijing-Kaifeng, and Beijing-Shanghai expressways in the latter part of the holiday.
In addition, citizens are advised to closely monitor upcoming weather forecasts. In the event of adverse weather conditions such as low visibility, precipitation, or icy roads, they should minimize going out or drive with caution.
