At the Volkswagen Brand China Plug-in Hybrid Media Workshop and Chengdu Driving Experience Event, Dr. Stephan Wöllenstein, Member of the Board of Management for Passenger Cars at Volkswagen and CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars China, stated: "Our goal is simple: to become the preferred new-energy vehicle brand among Chinese consumers—just as we’ve already achieved across both the passenger car and SUV markets. At the heart of our new-energy strategy lies the electrification of Volkswagen’s popular models. Specifically, we’re starting by introducing plug-in hybrid technology to reliable, trustworthy Volkswagen-branded vehicles." In this regard, Dr. Weidmann, Head of R&D at Volkswagen Group China and Head of the Vehicle Development Excellence Center, stated: "We’ve invested tremendous effort into giving these plug-in hybrid models a thorough, custom redesign. We’ve reimagined their body structures to maximize vehicle safety. Moreover, to achieve optimal weight distribution, we’ve relocated the fuel tank while positioning the battery beneath the rear seats. Underneath the battery modules, we’ve installed robust protective panels—designed not only to safeguard the battery packs but also to minimize noise and vibrations, enhancing ride comfort and aerodynamic performance. Another standout feature is our proprietary electric brake assist system, which can reduce braking distance by approximately 1.5 meters in extreme situations. Multiple driving modes: Handle every situation with a single tap
Another highlight of Volkswagen's plug-in hybrid vehicles is the ability to switch between different driving modes with a single tap. "In pure-electric mode, the vehicle is powered solely by the electric motor, enabling zero-emission driving," explained Wiedemann. "In hybrid mode, the car is driven by the electric motor during start-up and low-speed maneuvers. For the rest of the journey, the gasoline engine and electric motor work together seamlessly, delivering an exceptionally smooth, efficient, and eco-friendly driving experience—perfect for long-distance trips." Other modes include Battery Charging Mode, which allows the vehicle to recharge its battery while on the move. Additionally, there’s Battery Sustain Mode, designed to conserve energy for use when it’s most needed—a feature ideal for drivers heading into zero-emission zones. And then there’s the GTE Sport Mode, exclusive to Volkswagen models, which unlocks a whole new level of performance when activated. "In GTE Sport Mode," Wiedemann noted, "the steering becomes heavier, the accelerator pedal responds more sharply, and the engine’s signature roar intensifies. Together, the system delivers a total output of up to 155 kilowatts and a torque of 400 Nm. Pressing the GTE button instantly transforms the driving experience, offering a thrill reminiscent of our iconic GTI sports cars—while the 'E' stands for electric boost."
Volkswagen quality stems from relentless, meticulous testing.

"What does 'Volkswagen Quality' mean? For plug-in hybrid vehicles, it means rigorous testing. As Weidemann explains, "Before a vehicle receives mass-production approval, the high-voltage battery alone must pass more than 100 internal tests—covering both mandatory legal requirements and additional, far-more-stringent brand-specific tests unique to Volkswagen. Specifically for our plug-in hybrids, we’ve launched three challenging test projects in Europe and China, designed to ensure exceptional durability throughout the vehicle’s entire lifecycle. We’ve also subjected the battery protection systems to some of the harshest tests imaginable. Beyond that, we pay close attention to real-world driving scenarios. For instance, all our new-energy vehicles undergo stringent, high-intensity testing of their charging capabilities. We collaborate closely with charging infrastructure providers to analyze these test results, which not only enhances the reliability of our vehicles but also supports the ongoing development of China’s charging network."
Volkswagen Brand's Lineup of Plug-in Hybrid Models
Currently, the Volkswagen brand has launched four plug-in hybrid models in the Chinese market: the SAIC Volkswagen Tiguan L PHEV and Passat PHEV, as well as the FAW-Volkswagen Tharu GTE and the new Magotan GTE. All these models feature the same advanced powertrain—featuring an efficient 1.4 TSI engine paired with an exceptionally smooth, electrified DSG transmission, where the electric motor is seamlessly integrated into the gearbox itself. The TSI engine delivers a maximum power output of 110 kilowatts and a peak torque of up to 250 Nm, while the electric motor produces a maximum power of 85 kilowatts and a formidable torque of 330 Nm. Together, the system achieves a combined output of up to 155 kilowatts and a staggering torque figure of 400 Nm. In pure electric mode, Volkswagen's plug-in hybrid models can reach a top speed of up to 130 km/h. Equipped with a battery capacity of 13 kWh, these vehicles offer a minimum all-electric range of 52 kilometers—though the actual range may vary depending on the selected driving mode. Thanks to the seamless collaboration between the electric motor and the fuel-powered engine, these models deliver outstanding fuel efficiency, achieving a combined fuel consumption as low as 2 liters per 100 kilometers or even lower under optimal conditions.
