Recently, Mercedes-Benz became the first international automaker to simultaneously receive approval for L4-level autonomous driving tests on both urban roads and high-speed highways in Beijing, and will conduct these tests on designated roads within the city. Earlier, Mercedes-Benz had already been among the first automakers approved to carry out L3-level testing in Beijing by the end of 2023.
This project focuses on researching the multi-sensor perception capabilities of advanced autonomous driving systems, as well as their performance under extreme conditions, exploring deep integrations between perception and control. Two technologically upgraded Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedans—equipped with a comprehensive suite of sensors specifically designed for this project, including LiDAR, millimeter-wave radar, and cameras—are being used as L4-level autonomous driving test vehicles. Additionally, the test vehicles are outfitted with redundant systems to further enhance overall safety. On busy urban roads, these vehicles can safely and effortlessly execute maneuvers such as parking in and out of spaces, making U-turns, entering and exiting roundabouts, and performing unprotected left turns. On highways, when the vehicle ahead slows down, the test car can automatically change lanes and even pass through toll booths. In the event of an extreme situation, the vehicle will immediately adopt a minimum-risk strategy, autonomously steering itself to a safe location for temporary stoppage.
Level 4 autonomous driving represents highly automated driving, where the vehicle can independently perform all driving tasks in most scenarios and environments—without the need for the driver to be constantly ready to take over. This Level 4 autonomous driving test notification was jointly applied for by Mercedes-Benz and WenYuan Zhixing, a leading autonomous driving technology company, and issued by the Beijing High-Level Automated Driving Demonstration Zone Office.
