Honda to Begin Production of Next-Generation Hydrogen Fuel Cell System
On February 2, Honda Motor announced that it will begin producing the next-generation hydrogen fuel cell system jointly developed with General Motors this year, and plans to gradually ramp up sales of this battery system by 2030 as part of its strategy to expand its hydrogen energy business.
To achieve a carbon-neutral society, Honda Motor has been committed to researching and developing hydrogen energy technology and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles for more than 30 years. It is reported that since 2013, Honda has been collaborating with General Motors to jointly develop a next-generation fuel cell system.
Honda Senior Executive Officer Shinji Aoyama announced at a company event held in Tokyo that Honda will begin producing a next-generation hydrogen fuel cell system this year through its joint venture with General Motors. With the introduction of this "next-generation" hydrogen fuel cell system, Honda aims to more than double its durability while cutting costs by two-thirds.
Honda Motor also stated that the company aims to increase annual sales of its next-generation hydrogen fuel cell systems to approximately 2,000 sets around 2025, and further boost this figure to 60,000 sets by 2030. Honda is actively expanding the applications of its cutting-edge hydrogen fuel cell systems—beyond its own fuel-cell electric vehicles—to include commercial vehicles such as heavy-duty trucks, stationary power systems, and even construction machinery.
Tetsuya Hasebe, General Manager of Honda's Hydrogen Business Development Division, stated, "Commercial vehicles are being used all over the world, and they may become electrified just like passenger cars." However, he added that this could potentially lead to a divide between all-electric trucks and fuel-cell trucks.
