Recently, CarScoops—a foreign media outlet—reported that Volkswagen announced it will collaborate with three energy companies in the future: Vulcan Energy Resources Ltd., Umicore, and 24M Technologies. According to the report, the partnership between Volkswagen and these three firms will focus on three key areas: procuring carbon-neutral lithium materials, manufacturing battery cathode and anode materials, and enhancing battery production processes.
Currently, Volkswagen has signed a five-year supply contract with Vulcan Energy Resources Ltd for lithium hydroxide materials. Vulcan Energy has launched an extraction project called "Zero-Carbon Lithium," which enables sustainable sourcing of raw materials without the use of fossil fuels or evaporation ponds.
The Volkswagen Group will establish a joint venture with Umicore to supply battery materials for its battery plants in Europe. It is reported that, starting from 2025, the joint venture’s production capacity will reach at least 20 GWh. Ultimately, the goal is to achieve an annual production capacity of 160 GWh within 10 years, enough to meet the annual demand for producing 2.2 million electric vehicles.
Additionally, Volkswagen has also invested in 24M Technologies, a Cambridge-based battery startup whose proprietary semi-solid battery manufacturing process is expected to further enhance material recycling efficiency while helping to cut costs. Notably, Volkswagen will also establish a new subsidiary dedicated to the research and development of these cutting-edge technologies.
