Ballard partners with Quantron to develop hydrogen fuel cell trucks

According to reports, Ballard, the global leader in fuel cell technology, has announced a partnership with QUANTRON, a world-leading provider of electric vehicle integration solutions. This collaboration between the two companies is expected to accelerate the deployment and adoption of fuel cell technology. By combining Ballard's cutting-edge expertise with QUANTRON's complementary strengths, the partnership will enable more customers to embrace zero-emission fuel cell trucks—without compromising range, payload capacity, vehicle utilization, or total cost of ownership.

The initial collaboration between the two companies will focus on integrating Ballard’s FCmove™ series of heavy-duty fuel cell modules into QUANTRON’s electric drive systems and vehicles. Currently, the fuel cell truck platforms being developed by both sides include a 7.5-tonne transport truck, a 44-tonne heavy-duty truck, and a municipal waste collection vehicle.
Barrett and QUANTRON anticipate the initial deployment of these fuel-cell trucks in the second half of 2022. In Europe, many governments are offering subsidies and incentives to fleet operators. Notably, Germany recently pledged to cover up to 80% of the costs through its Electric Mobility Support Technology program, helping fleets transition from internal combustion engines to alternative propulsion systems.
Compared to other vehicles, heavy-duty trucks have a greater impact on carbon dioxide emissions and air pollution within cities. Many European countries' hydrogen development strategies already recognize the critical role of hydrogen and fuel cells in decarbonization, and these technologies are essential for driving the entire industry toward a cleaner, greener future. QUANTRON's collaboration with Ballard will leverage the synergies between battery and fuel-cell electric powertrains, enabling a more sustainable, faster, and cost-effective transition to decarbonized transportation.
