Horizon Robotics unveils the Journey 5 chip and launches its open ecosystem strategy.

On July 29, Horizon Robotics successfully held the "Journey Together, Walking Side by Side" — High-Performance, High-Computing Power Whole-Vehicle Intelligent Computing Platform and Strategic Launch Event at the Shanghai Auto Exhibition Center. At this groundbreaking tech gathering in the automotive industry, Horizon unveiled the industry's first full-scenario, whole-vehicle intelligent central computing chip, Journey 5, along with the Matrix 5 autonomous driving computing platform built on Journey 5, and the SuperDrive all-scenario whole-vehicle intelligence solution. Additionally, Horizon launched TogetherOS, a real-time in-vehicle operating system featuring an open software architecture, and announced the official launch of its open ecosystem strategy.

As the third-generation automotive-grade product following the groundbreaking mass production of Journey 2 and Journey 3—China’s first automotive-grade AI chips—Journey 5 combines exceptional computing power with superior performance. Featuring a single-chip AI processing capability of up to 128 TOPS, it delivers an astonishing 1,283 FPS of computational speed while maintaining an ultra-low latency of just 60 milliseconds for seamless, high-efficiency collaboration—and all while consuming as little as 30W of power. The launch of Journey 5 marks Horizon as the industry’s sole provider currently capable of offering comprehensive in-vehicle intelligent chip solutions spanning every scenario from Level 2 to Level 4 autonomy.
The Journey 5 is tailor-made for high-level autonomous driving, achieving technological breakthroughs from zero to one and beyond to N. It boasts increasingly sophisticated features and a meticulously refined architecture. Equipped with 16+ full-HD cameras delivering 40Gbps video input, along with dual-channel, ultra-low-latency "instant" image processing, the system ensures exceptional image quality. Additionally, it leverages Gigabit Ethernet (TSN/PTP) to provide hardware-level synchronization support for multiple cameras and sensors. Moreover, the Journey 5 features robust heterogeneous computing capabilities, seamlessly integrating comprehensive functionality while maintaining top-notch security and data protection.

At the press conference, Horizon Robotics announced its first batch of production-intent partners for the Journey 5 platform, including SAIC Motor Group, Great Wall Motor, JAC Group, Changan Automobile, Li Auto, BYD Auto, Neta Auto, and Avatr Technology. Senior executives from each company attended the event.

“At Horizon, we don’t engage in mass-produced hardware, software bundling, or closed solutions.” During the meeting, Horizon’s founder and CEO, Yu Kai, announced the launch of an open ecosystem strategy, aiming to inject fresh vitality into the intelligent automotive industry and fostering synchronized resonance and collaborative development across the sector.

Starting from a "holistic altruistic" mindset, Horizon has unveiled TogetherOS—a real-time automotive operating system built on the seL4 secure microkernel architecture. TogetherOS features an open-source software framework, inviting all industry ecosystem partners to collaborate and co-create. Currently, Horizon has established a deep partnership with the ELISA open-source project under the Linux Foundation, leveraging Linux-based solutions and advanced security mechanisms to meet the system's overarching functional safety and security objectives.

At the press conference, Horizon announced ecological partnership agreements with AutoCore, Zebra Intelligence, Changan Automobile, Great Wall Motors, JAC Group, SAIC Motor, and Lionbridge Technologies.

The Matrix 5 autonomous driving computing platform is a vehicle-level computing platform reference design built on Horizon's latest-generation, high-performance automotive-grade AI chip—the Journey 5. It seamlessly integrates with Horizon's leading algorithmic software modules, offers customizable hardware configurations, and provides an open, flexible, user-friendly environment that also encourages independent innovation.
In a remarkably short timeframe, Horizon, Continental Group, Neusoft Ruichi, Luxshare Group, and Linkage Innovation—four Tier-1 and ODM ecosystem partners—have each completed the hardware design and prototype development of their respective products, all based on the Matrix 5 reference design. This impressive speed was made possible by Horizon’s highly open reference design and underlying system, as well as the deep trust and collaborative relationship between both sides.

Horizon has also simultaneously unveiled its SuperDrive all-scenario intelligent vehicle solution, based on the hardware reference design built around the Matrix 5 computing platform. This solution is tailored for comprehensive smart driving scenarios—encompassing high-speed, urban, and parking environments—as well as advanced in-cabin intelligent interactions and seamless whole-vehicle intelligence that integrates both internal and external vehicle functions.

In the future, Horizon will steadfastly adhere to the technology roadmap of whole-vehicle intelligence, confidently stepping into the role of an enabler for open platforms. With an open ecosystem strategy rooted in "all-round altruism," we aim to expand the smart automotive industry ecosystem, fostering a growing circle of collaboration. Together with all our ecosystem partners, we’ll embark on this journey hand-in-hand, advancing side by side toward new heights—and ultimately ushering in a new era of intelligent connectivity for everything around us.
